Social & Racial Equity - In-person Tour of the Reopened Freedom House

After completing their reading and discussion of African Americans of Alexandria, Virginia: Beacons of Light in the Twentieth Century, the Social and Racial Equity group will tour the Freedom House Museum at 1315 Duke Street. The museum closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic, but recently reopened on May 27, with three new exhibitions showcasing Alexandria’s Black history and the Black experience in America. The National Historic Landmark is what remains of a large complex dedicated to trafficking thousands of Black men, women and children between 1828 and 1861. The museum honors the lives and experiences of the enslaved and free Black people who lived in–and were trafficked through–Alexandria.

AHA member Penny Roberts secured 20 tour tickets for AHA members and guests. The tickets are for timed entries; 10 tickets are for 11am and 10 are for 11:15am. Everyone will meet at the front of the museum before entering. Contact Penny Roberts if you need additional information.
